LEONARDO AND VIGEVANO

At the end of the fifteenth century, Vigevano experienced an extraordinary economic, political and cultural growth. Ludovico il Moro, the Duke of Milan, had the intention to transform the city into "a second Milan": for that reason, Bramante and Leonardo spent time in both cities. No other place in the world has hosted at the same time the greatest painter and the greatest architect of the time. Leonardo da Vinci stayed several times in Vigevano along the countryside, noting on his notebooks the water stairs, the mills, the way of burying the vines, the stables that housed the horses of the Duke. Leonardo, in designing the ideal city, was inspired by Vigevano where the Castle and Piazza Ducale constitute a possible architectural model of modern urban development. For this reason Vigevano celebrates the 500th anniversary of his death with a rich calendar of events.

18 MAY 20 OCTOBER
EXHIBITION “LEONARDO DA VINCI E GUIDO DA VIGEVANO: ANATOMIA IN FIGURE”
CASTLE OF VIGEVANO - CASTLE STABLES

It was in Lombardy, between Milan and Pavia, that Leonardo da Vinci studied and produced some of his most significant anatomical drawings and his intention to represent the entire structure of the human body in “illustrative plates” has a precedent in Guido da Vigevano, author of the treatise “Anothomia designata per figuras” (1345 c.). On the basis of this assumption, and also of comprehensive studies and research carried out by the University of Pavia and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, a popular science exhibition is to be set up featuring high-quality reproductions of Guido da Vigevano’s anatomical plates, slides and reproductions of a selection of Leonardo’s anatomical drawings and a number of wax anatomical models.

MONTH OF JUNE
LEONARDO AND VIGEVANO TOUR

An app will enable tourists and visitors to get the most out of this fascinating tour, which starts in the Piazza Ducale and then moves on to visit certain parts of the Castle. After which, accompanied by storytelling, visitors will be guided in the direction of some still extant 15th-century watermills and to the Sforza village (Frazione Sforzesca) where they can admire the first model farm (the “Colombarone”) built by Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan, and today owned by the Municipality of Vigevano. From the Frazione Sforzesca the tour will continue through the places where Leonardo wrote the phrase: “On the 2nd day of February 1494 at the Sforzesca I drew 25 steps, each 2/3 of a braccio (an arm’s length ndr) and 8 braccia (4.8m) wide”.

EXHIBITION “NEL SEGNO DI BRAMANTE E LEONARDO: ALCUNI ESEMPI TRA MILANO, VIGEVANO E IL PIEMONTE”

Castle of Vigevano - Civic Art Gallery

This exhibition of ten paintings proposes to place Vigevano’s artistic production at the hub of a complex network of cultural interaction and exchange, extending not only to Milan but also to the neighbouring region of Piedmont. Amongst the exhibition’s various aims is that of valorising the presence of artists in the local area and identifying the cultural trajectories that link the artistic community of Vigevano with the surrounding region. The catalogue, which includes essays and notes by well-known academics and specialists on the subject, starts with Bramante and Leonardo’s well-documented presence in the area and goes on to examine the significant influence they had on a wide variety of artists, as confirmed both by the excellent pieces of art on loan from public and private collections as well as the less well-known, or previously unseen, exhibits.
